It’s 2:43 AM and I just got home from the studio where we recorded a new song called “Life Of Someone Else”. It’s killer and I’ll try to sneak it online for you guys when I can finally grab a copy of it — it hasn’t been mixed yet.
The coming weeks will be hectic as I balance exam timetables and 4–5 studio sessions a week but when there’s an album recording involved, it’s just one of those things where you gotta balance and juggle everything or the funky man in the psychedelic Santa suit comes and smacks you upside the head with a trout.
A few people have been asking me recently what it’s like to be recording an album. Well, I drive an hour to get to the studios every time we have a studio session and the drive home takes 30 minutes as there is no traffic at 1–2 AM in the morning. With the addition to uni, I juggle singing lessons, meetings with Michael for songwriting, studio mixing sessions with various producers and the actual studio recording sessions themselves. Sometimes, I get home at 3 AM in the morning, then wake up at 7 AM for classes, then head off to Michael for some songwriting, then head to the studio at night for some more recording. It’s hectic but it’s fun trying to dodge the trees as I drive home half-asleep (just kidding).
Actually it’s not that bad. The most rewarding experience is that moment where there’s musical synergy and the end result is something so funky we wet our pants.
The studio sessions get funky sometimes — for example, one of the most recent sessions had me gagged with a silk tie while I had to try to have my vocals recorded while singing through it. It gets a little strange, but when it’s the creative arts, you just roll with it.
