WordCast Conversations 13: WordPress 3.0

WordPress Logo 300x300 WordCast Conversations 13: WordPress 3.0It’s lucky episode 13 of WordCast Conversations, and this week we’ve got a jam-packed episode dedicated to the newest version of WordPress set to hit websites everywhere in mere days – WordPress 3.0. Joined by an expert panel, Dave and Kym will run down all the new features, and chat about where WordPress is heading.

Panel

Jeff is excited about the menu management although it’s still a bit rocky. Sidebars have had drag and droppable widgets for ages, and now buttons in a menu will have the same capability.

WordPress is Quickly Becoming a CMS

  • Brad is excited about custom post types and custom taxonomies.
  • WordPress now uses the word “site” throughout the interface in place of “blog” and “weblog”.

Thoughts on the Current 3.0 Beta Version

  • Jeff has enjoyed playing with menu management.
  • Brad is a little annoyed with the menus issue.

Multisite Settings

  • Jeff warns that it’s still difficult.
  • Miriam finds it much quicker than working with MU.

Developers are working with 3.0 already for their clients, planning projects around the new features.

Miriam mentioned that Drupal is becoming a bigger deal in the CMS world these days.

New Default Theme: 2010

  • Bye-bye to Kubrick! You served us well.
  • Dave and Miriam aren’t fans of themes with admin panels.
  • The Great Divide: Developers and less code-friendly WordPress users seem to be divided on the issue of theme settings in the WordPress admin panel. They get in the way of the code when you’re trying to develop a custom theme, and actually slow down WordPress loading times, but many bloggers enjoy the simplicity. Where do you stand?
